Siargao is a tear-shaped island in the far east of the Philippines, known as the country's surfing capital. It has a laid-back, friendly, younger feel, with palm-lined roads, island-hopping and a growing cafe and wellness scene. General Luna is the main hub for visitors.
Siargao Airport, in Del Carmen on the north side of the island, has flights from Manila and Cebu, and the drive to General Luna takes roughly 45 minutes. You can also arrive by ferry from Surigao City. The island was badly hit by Typhoon Odette in December 2021 and has largely recovered, but check current conditions before you plan a trip.
Many hotels have visitor policies, so check before you plan to have anyone visit your room.
Many visitors rent a motorbike, which is the most common way to get around the island, but it's also where most accidents happen, so wear a helmet and take extra care on the roads. Tricycles, motorbike taxis and hired vans are also available.
People speak Surigaonon and Cebuano (Bisaya), and English is widely used in the tourism areas. Maayong buntag (good morning) and Salamat (thank you) are easy to learn.
Peak surf season is around September to November. Weather varies, and the wetter months are usually around December to February, so check the forecast and keep your plans flexible.
Siargao is a tourism island, and medical services on the island are limited, so travel insurance is a good idea. Planning your first trip?
