Iloilo City, on the island of Panay, officially calls itself the "City of Love," which is a good omen for anyone hoping to meet someone special. It's a relaxed, walkable city with a long river esplanade, grand old churches, excellent food and a friendly, easygoing feel.
Iloilo International Airport, about 30 to 40 minutes from the city, has flights from Manila and Cebu. The city blends heritage and modern life, with colonial-era buildings and churches alongside a polished new business district. It's also the gateway to the island of Guimaras, which is famous for its mangoes.
Many hotels have visitor policies, so check before you plan to have anyone visit your room.
Jeepneys, tricycles and taxis are the main options. Ride-hailing coverage varies, so ask your hotel for help with reliable transport. Distances in the city are short, so you won't spend long in traffic.
The local language is Hiligaynon, also called Ilonggo. Filipino and English are widely understood. Maayong aga (good morning) and Salamat (thank you) are easy to learn and will be appreciated. The Dinagyang Festival in January is the city's biggest celebration, so book early if you plan to visit then.
The drier months, roughly December to May, are the most comfortable. June to November is the rainy and typhoon season, so check the forecast and keep your plans flexible.
