Davao City is the largest city on the island of Mindanao and one of the biggest in the country by land area. It's known for being clean and orderly, with local rules that are taken seriously, and it has a relaxed, friendly feel. It also puts you close to some of the Philippines' best nature, which gives you plenty of ideas for dates.
Davao has long had a reputation as one of the safest cities in the Philippines. In the World Travel Index's April 2026 ranking of Philippine cities, which looks at crime rates, traffic safety and general traveler security, it placed second, behind only Dumaguete, and Numbeo's user-submitted safety index has also ranked it at or near the top. Rankings like these are based on indexes and survey data rather than guarantees, so the usual precautions still apply, but it's an encouraging sign for a first visit.
Davao International Airport has direct flights from Manila and Cebu. The city has modern malls such as Abreeza and SM Lanang, a wide range of restaurants, and a mix of cultures that includes people with roots across the Visayas, Mindanao's indigenous communities, and Chinese and Muslim communities. Nature is close by, including Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines.
Many hotels have visitor policies, so check before you plan to have anyone visit your room.
Grab and metered taxis are the simplest options. Jeepneys and motorbike taxis are common and cheap but can be confusing at first. For trips outside the city, such as the Philippine Eagle Center or Samal Island, hiring a car and driver for the day is easy to arrange.
Mount Apo can be climbed, but it's a serious multi-day trek that needs a permit and a guide, so it's one for the adventurous once you know each other well.
Most people in Davao speak a local form of Bisaya (Cebuano), along with Filipino and English. Maayong buntag (good morning), Salamat (thank you) and Kumusta ka? (how are you?) will all be understood and appreciated.
Davao has fairly even weather, with some rain throughout the year, and it tends to sit outside the usual typhoon path that affects the north. It's a comfortable place to visit in most months, but check the forecast before you travel.
Davao City is generally considered orderly, but Mindanao is a big island and conditions vary from place to place. Check your own government's travel advice for every area you plan to visit, especially outside Davao City, and follow local rules such as smoking bans. Planning your first trip?
