Updated October 2026 · A guide from the Filipina Singles team
Cebu is one of the easiest places in the Philippines to meet someone in person. It has an international airport, modern malls and restaurants, a long history, and beaches and waterfalls within a few hours. If you're planning to meet someone from Cebu, or you're thinking of living here, this guide covers the practical basics.
Cebu City is the oldest city in the Philippines and is often called the "Queen City of the South." It's the main hub of the Visayas, with international flights landing at Mactan–Cebu International Airport on Mactan Island. English is widely spoken, there's a sizeable foreign community, and you'll find hotels, cafés and restaurants for every budget. For many people who live in the surrounding provinces, Cebu City is where they work and study, which makes it a natural place to meet.
Traffic in Metro Cebu can be heavy, so it's worth staying close to where you'll spend most of your time. Many hotels have visitor policies, so check them before you plan to have anyone visit your room.
Ride-hailing apps such as Grab, for both cars and motorbike taxis, are the simplest option for visitors. Regular taxis are also available. Jeepneys and buses are very cheap but can be confusing at first. Always allow extra time for traffic. For day trips outside the city, many visitors hire a car with a driver for the day.
Most people in Cebu speak Cebuano, often called Bisaya, along with English and Filipino. A few words go a long way: Maayong buntag (good morning), Salamat (thank you) and Kumusta ka? (how are you?). Faith is a big part of life here, especially devotion to the Santo Niño, and the Sinulog Festival each January is one of the country's largest celebrations. The drier months, roughly December to May, are the most comfortable, though April and May can be very hot. June to November is the rainy and typhoon season. Sinulog in January is exciting but crowded, and hotels fill up early, so book ahead. Check the weather forecast before you travel, and consider travel insurance.
