Cagayan de Oro, often shortened to CDO and nicknamed the "City of Golden Friendship," is the main city of Northern Mindanao. It sits on Macajalar Bay and is best known for whitewater rafting on the Cagayan de Oro River. It's a lively, friendly university city with good food, malls and plenty of outdoor activities.
Most flights land at Laguindingan Airport, roughly 45 to 60 minutes from the city by road. There are flights from Manila and Cebu. Many visitors also combine CDO with a trip to nearby Camiguin Island.
Many hotels have visitor policies, so check before you plan to have anyone visit your room.
Taxis, jeepneys, tricycles and motorbike taxis are common. Ride-hailing coverage varies, so ask your hotel for help. Allow extra time during rush hour.
The main language is Cebuano (Bisaya), and English and Filipino are widely understood. Maayong buntag (good morning), Salamat (thank you) and Kumusta ka? (how are you?) will be appreciated.
The drier months are the most comfortable, but CDO gets rain at many times of the year. The city has had serious floods in the past, so always check the weather forecast before you travel and keep your plans flexible.
