Boracay is a small island off the northwest tip of Panay, famous for White Beach, one of the most photographed beaches in the Philippines. It's a lively tourist island with restaurants, beach bars and water sports, and it's easy to get around and easy to meet people. It's also a place where it's worth being a little extra careful, because so many people you meet are connected to the tourism industry.
Most visitors fly into Caticlan (Godofredo P. Ramos) Airport and take a short boat transfer to the island, which takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Others fly into Kalibo, about one to two hours away by road, and continue by boat. Boracay was closed for six months in 2018 for environmental cleanup, and strict rules on the beach and the environment still apply, so read the current rules before you go.
Many hotels have visitor policies, so check before you plan to have anyone visit your room.
The island is small. You can walk along the beach path, or take tricycles and electric trikes along the main road. Agree on the fare before you set off.
Local languages include Aklanon and Hiligaynon, and English is widely used in the tourism areas. Salamat (thank you) is always welcome.
From about November to April, the northeast monsoon (the amihan) keeps the White Beach side calm and sunny, which is the most popular time to visit. From about June to October, the southwest monsoon (the habagat) brings rougher seas and rain to White Beach.
Boracay is a party destination as well as a beach destination, so take your time getting to know anyone you meet there. Planning your first trip?
