Dating in Bohol and Panglao: A Guide for Foreign Visitors and Expats

Updated October 2026 · A guide from the Filipina Singles team

Bohol is one of the most popular island destinations in the Visayas. Tagbilaran is the main city, and Panglao Island, joined to Bohol by bridges, has the beach resorts. It's an easy, scenic place to meet someone, with plenty to do together without much planning.

Getting there

The Bohol-Panglao International Airport on Panglao Island has flights from Manila and Cebu. Many visitors also take a fast ferry from Cebu City to Tagbilaran, which takes around two hours and runs several times a day.

Where to stay

  • Alona Beach, Panglao: the liveliest beach area, with restaurants, bars and dive shops.
  • Dumaluan and the quieter Panglao beaches: more peaceful resorts.
  • Tagbilaran City: cheaper, more local, and handy for ferries.

Many hotels have visitor policies, so check them before you plan to have anyone visit your room.

Getting around

Tricycles are common on Panglao and in town. Most visitors see the countryside on a day tour with a hired van and driver, which is easy to arrange through your hotel. If you rent a motorbike, wear a helmet and take care on the roads.

Easy date ideas

  • The countryside tour: the Chocolate Hills, the Loboc River floating lunch cruise and the man-made mahogany forest in Bilar.
  • Tarsiers: Bohol is home to the Philippine tarsier, one of the world's smallest primates. Choose a sanctuary that keeps its distance from the animals, and never touch them or use a flash.
  • Island hopping to Balicasag Island and Virgin Island for snorkeling.
  • Hinagdanan Cave in Dauis, a cool cave with a swimming pool inside.
  • Sunset dinner on Alona Beach.

Language and culture

Most Boholanos speak Cebuano (Bisaya), and English is widely used in the tourism areas. Maayong buntag (good morning), Salamat (thank you) and Kumusta ka? (how are you?) are easy to learn.

When to visit

The drier months, roughly December to May, are the best time for beaches and boat trips. The rest of the year is wetter, with a risk of typhoons, so check the forecast and keep your plans flexible.

Staying safe

  • Use licensed boat operators with life jackets, and check the sea conditions.
  • Agree on prices for tours and transport before you go, and be wary of touts on the beach.
  • Be careful on rented motorbikes and wear a helmet.
  • Watch your phone and bag in busy places.
  • Meet in a public place the first time, and tell someone where you're going.
  • Never send money before you've met someone in person, whatever the reason. Read our guide on spotting dating scams.

Bohol is a tourism island, so many of the people you meet will work in the tourism industry. That's perfectly normal, but it's another reason to take your time and stay alert.
